In putting together this volume of extracts from The Stephenson Locomotive Society Journal the intent was to use a light touch, reproducing the original wording and spellings wherever possible. However, to maintain a consistent style a modern A4 page layout has been adopted in respect of paragraphs, image placement and pagination.
Amongst the many anomalies noted in the originals are inconsistencies in the treatment of company and other names, notably Beyer, Peacock & Co., Ltd., Dübs & Co., Tal-y-llyn and St. Johns (Isle of Man). As Editor for the volume it was also noticeable how the print versions of these articles have preserved the slow evolutionary transition in the forms of English usage and typesetting styles, for example, in the use of the old form of to-day rather than today’s contemporary spelling; this topic in itself could form an article, but not for this volume! As for St. Johns (or is it St. John’s?) Isle of Man, research via the excellent on-line, Isle of Man government mapping service* seeking the definitive answer shows both spellings remain in use.
A further dilemma, as these articles were originally written in the members’ Journal was whether to update the references to members and change them to readers - they have been left as originally written. With respect to the metrication of weights and measures; the original units/fractions have been retained as published, albeit with editing wherever possible into a common format of abbreviations and symbols. Engineering drawings have been included in the articles as first published, and are not reproduced to a specific uniform scale within this edition.
In conclusion we believe all the aberrations which arose during the conversion of the original text into digital format using OCR processing have been spotted and corrected; please forgive any that may have escaped unnoticed until after the document’s printing stage!
